Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1999 olds cutlass a/c problem, powertrain control module, olds cutlass

Question
My 1999 olds cutlass a/c on/off control button works intermittently.  Had the system checked and it cooled correctly and had enough freon.  The a/c button just turns off whenever it wants.  The repairman said I would have to replace the whole panel that had the heat/ac buttons on it which would be about $300.  Is there another fix since it works more times than not or can just the a/c button be replaced?  Could it be tied to a problem with the compressor?

Answer
Hi
I believe the mechanic is correct.
It is a VERY common problem on the "N" platform (Cutlass/Malibu) in this year range.

You do not relly want to bypass the switch as it is a ClassII data request that is used by both the PCM (powertrain Control Module) and the BCM (Body control Module). If certian criteria are NOT within parameters, either module could "deny" the A/C system from turning on, so as NOT to damage components.

All that being said, it is ultimatly your choice and decision. I would consider a used part or an aftermarket part (if avalible). MOST used parts will have some sort of warranty. Not all shops are trustworthy of used parts. It may save you a few dollars. Or just "bite The Bullet" as it were and get it done now, and it will not happen anymore for probabally as long as you own the car.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck
