Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Erratic engine knock in a 95 Buick Park Ave Ultra with a supercharger, buick park ave, window defroster

Question
I was under the dash trying to find why cold air would blow out the window defroster but not the dash vents. All is connected back and I had to go out. The car seemed to have a little more power when leaving the driveway. I got to my destination but was hearing clattering from the Engine. I was able to get back home and it is very noticeable, but the oil pressure (gage) is OK. The Temp (gangue) was OK. All fluids were OK. It gets less noticeable at higher RPMs but still there. I suspected the supercharger, as it has always clattered. I took off that belt (supercharger, Water pump, A/AC)and started the car. Still the noise. I took off the other belt(alt.,power steering) and the sound disappeared except a small clunk when turning off the ignition. I then put the first belt back on (by itself) and the rattling clunk was there. When I was checking the vent situation it was running for almost 2 hours sitting in the shade driveway and not moving, but the temp gage said it was OK. This noise sounds like an engine running overheated more than an engine out of time. This occurs now even cold. Can you help? Thank you

Answer
Hi
As much as I'd like to tell you I can help, it really is hard to diagnose a noise without having the car here.
I can tell you, if the noise goes away by removing belt(s) then it IS a belt driven accessory.
No question about it. The Oil pump, crank, cam and timing chain all will turn, obviously, without the accessory belts.
That being said, rev it up without the belts.
Rev it up with the belts.
Get a small (8"to 12" piece of garden hose) and put one end up to your ear, the other place it on the BELT side of the SuperCharger. You'll hear the bearing noise if thats what it is, FOR SURE. It is like no other noise.
Place the open end on other accessory's. Does it get loud on the water pump...etc.....etc...
Rev it up with belts on and off.
Is it a deep "throaty" knock? If it does, That would pinpoint a crank main bearing or rod bearing. If it is more ticking, that would probabally be a valve train issue.
Try to pinpoint it.
This will help.
I do hope this info helps.
Wish I could hear it....
Good Luck
