Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 96 buick century window motor, olds cutlass, plastic ribbon

Question
Hi Van

Tomorrow I am going to replacing the window motor in my 1996 Buick Century.  I think the motor is bad because it would go up a little - then I'd wait 30 seconds and it would go up a little more and so on. Now it doesn't go up or down. (The other windows work) I have looked over the directions and my one concern is the warning about the spring - the spring can cause harm and damage if the sector gear is not locked in place.  If you could tell me what the sector gear is I will lock it in place. My diagram doesn't show it. I refuse to ask my husband for reasons we don't need to get into - I need to fix this window by myself  - I just don't want to lose any fingers or an eye doing it.

Thank you
Kathy Willard

Answer
Hello Kathy,
I have a 95 Olds Cutlass, and remember that warning about drilling a hole and locking the spring....but the motor and gearbox didn't contain any spring, and I doubt yours does either.
Take a trip to the public library, and go to the refference section. There you can find the actual factory manuals for that car. See what it says, and make a copy.

But I think yours is like mine, and uses a plastic ribbon with holes in it, (kinda looks like a huge roll of caps after they have been shot in a toy gun.) If you have the inner door panel off, you should be able to see some of that ribbon.
If so, I'd say no spring.

Good luck....with the motor, and him.
