Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlas Supreme, oldsmobile cutlas supreme, chain and sprockets

Question
Hi,
I was wondering if a 1991 Cutlas Supreme with a 3.4 litre V-6 engine required a regular timing belt change? My brother is looking at purchasing this car and to his knowledge, it has not had a timing belt change. The car has over 200,000 kilometers on it.
Also, what would be involved to change the rear seal?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
Brad

Answer
Hello Brad,
A 91 3.4L engine?
GM and Olds had 3.0, 3.1, 3.3, and 3.8 engines, but I don't know about 3.4.
All the ones I listed don't have timing belts, they have a chain and sprockets.
If the oil has been relatively well cared for, there is no reason to believe the chain should be replaced.

The rear seal....that depends, again, on the engine.
Some have a one piece seal that requires removal of the transmission/transaxle, and flex plate, and the seal replaced from there.
Others require jacking the engine up and removing the oil pan and rear main cap, and doing it there.

Not a driveway job unless you just really like challenges like that.
Might ask a local mechanic on that one.
