Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 2000 Olds Alero 3.4L O2 sensor problem?, 2000 olds alero, vacuum leaks

Question
Hi Van, I've been unable to follow-up with Pete regarding my car problem and was hoping that you could answer my last question.
(Initial question:When accelerating (moderate to heavy, ie. when highway passing) the engine surges/hesitates up and down until normal speed resumes, kind of like the power is cutting in and out. Sometimes at start-up the idle fluctuates up and down as well.  Fuel economy appears to be down and most recently the service engine light came on (have not had the service light code read). I have tried to rule out faulty plugs and wires and vacuum leaks, could you please point me in the right direction) Pete responded with: "it's a faulty idle control valve."
Since then I've been able to have the code read: P0131 O2 sensor circuit low voltage. Does this rule out the idle control valve or is it primarily the O2 sensor that I have to deal with?

Answer
Hello David,
In a word...no. it doesn't rule it out. The O2 sensor may be reading a rich or lean condition. Either could be caused by several things, the TPS among them.
The TPS can be tested, before just replacing it.

A stuck EGR valve could also cause the same symptoms, and should be cleaned.

Low fuel pressure is another thing to check.
