Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: spark plug replacement gone wrong, engine vacuum, platinum plugs

Question
Hi,

I have a 1999 Buick Century Custom. The engine started running really rough and my check engine light came on and I had it tested. The result was for the spark plugs/wires.

So I picked up pre-gapped, platinum plugs to do first (with my fiance's help). I figured we'd replace the wires if the plugs didn't fix it. Well, after they were all replaced, not only did it not solve the problem, but my engine wouldn't  stay running (dies after 1-2 seconds unless given constant gas) and my power breaks seem to not be working! What went wrong?

1. Do you think I need to replace the wires as well, or could it be a problem with the plugs?

2. What could we have done that would cause the engine to not stay running?

3. What could we have done that would affect the power breaks?

4. Also, is there any easier way to get the engine to pivot for better access to the rear spark plugs?

Thanks so much,
Ann

Answer
it sounds like you have no engine vacuum. probrably a compression leak(a spark plug left loose). if it is a 3100 engine you can take the bolts out of the front mounts(they look like a dogbone and rock the motor forward. please be very careful not to cross the threads in the head, those heads are aluminum and very expensive. i'd take the plugs all back out and make sure they are straight and tight, but don't go too tight.
