Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: intermittent starting problem on 1984 Oldsmobile cutlass ciera, oldsmobile cutlass ciera, oldsmobile cutlass

Question
Sometimes my car will start and other times it won't. I am a woman who knows very little about vehicles but am starting to learn. I am not interested in doing the work myself so I rely on mechanics. I am not sure if my mechanic is telling me the truth so I wanted to ask you if you have had any experience with this make and model. I have a new cap and roter, new plug wires and the mechanic put in supposedly a good used ignition module and carberator. Usually my car has not problem starting if it has been running for a while and is warm, but each morning or after the car has cooled down for any length of time it won't start. This evening I tried starting it and when it wouldn't I left it for about 5 or 10 minutes and then it started. THis behaviour seems to be a pattern. Do you think it is a wiring problem in the ignition or coil? In your experience have you known this make and model to have any specific problems like this? I would be grateful for any ideas on this as I don't even know what questions to ask when talking with mechanics.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

While I am enjoying flirting around with the mechanic the many recent visits I have made are  very frustrating because what I really need is a reliable vehicle.

Answer
Hello Dawn,
You said he replaced the carburetor, so since it has a carburetor, I would expect the choke adjustment to be the first thing I would check. Make sure it is closing when you hit the gas pedal before trying to start it.
Carburetors are old style, and young cute mechanics may not be familiar with the necessary adjustments.
Without insulting him, see if there is an OLD mechanic around the shop that used to work on carbureted vehicles.
