Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1996 Oldmobile Achieva, oldsmobile achieva, 1996 oldsmobile achieva

Question
My in-laws had a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva which they have given to my 16 year old son. When the car is started all of the idiot lights on the gauges light up and do not shut off. We went to the local junk yard (automotive recycling yard) and got a used set of gauges. Once the gauges are installed the car will start for 2 seconds and shut off. Reinstalled original gauges and car starts and runs fine but with idiot lights still on. Someone suggested this might have something to do with the PASS key system, but did not have any other suggestions. If this does have to do with the PASS key system, how can I program my original ignition and key to the new (used) gauges.

Answer
Mark, If you want to try to program it, you need to put the key in the ignition, turn it to bump the starter, then leave it sit for ten minutes, with the key in run position, come back leave it on and bump it again, do this at least three times, if it doesn't work, you probrably got a bad cluster.
Hope this helps, Chuck
