Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 89 buick lesabre just quits, fuel pump relay, buick lesabre

Question
doesn't matter if it's hot or cold or if it has run for a long time or
just a few minutes.  my 89 buick lesabre 2 door (with the 3.8) motor
just quits at random.  sometimes it will start right back up and
sometimes it has to set for a day or two before it will start again.  the
battery is good but it acts like it isn't getting any fuel.  can you help?

Answer
You have to determine if it is getting any spark to the spark plugs first.

Then check your fuel pressure with a gage.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

7. If it does NOT run for the 2 seconds the fault is either the fuel pump. fuel pump relay
