Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: FUEL PUMP FUSE, buick skylark, type fuses

Question
I HAVE A 91 BUICK SKYLARK THAT CONTINUES TO BLOW FUEL PUMP FUSES. I CAN WAIT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND REPLACE IT AND ALL IS FINE. THE TIME SPAN BE TWEEN FAILURE AND EFFECTIVE FUSE REPLACEMENT SEEMS TO KEEP GETTING LONGER. I HAVE SEARCHED THE ENTIRE WIRING FROM FUEL PUMP TO CARBERATOR AND CAN FIND NO BARE SPOTS ETC.I HAVE RE WRAPPED THE WIRES FROM THE CARB BACK TO THE FIREWALL. THIS SEEMS TO WORK TO THE NEXT FAILURE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR 6 MONTHS OR SO. FAILURE SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN GOING UP HILL ONLY.
ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE WOULD BE DEEPLY WELCOME.

Answer
Hello Dale,
I would say on first thought that the fuel pump is probably about worn out, and is drawing too much amperage, but there are a couple other things to check first.

First, I would get a test meter that can measure current draw, and connect it where I can see what amperage is being required by the pump.

A loose connection....dirty or corroded connectors, or a rusty ground, can cause the pump circuit to have a lot of resistance, and could draw more power than the fuse is rated, and blow it.
The fuse holder itself, if it grips the fuse too loosely, can actually melt the fuse inside on the glass type fuses, just from the heat, due to resistance.

And make sure where the ground wire from the fuel pump connector bolts to the frame, that the connection is clean and tight.
