Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 92 olds ciera fuel pump?, tank fuel, gas tank

Driving my inlaws olds and thought I ran out of gas and limped it to fuel station
after filling it up  wont restart.
checked and no fuel at fuel rail bleed port
had it towed to dealership says it's bad fuel pump and $500 to fix I found one new on ebay for $135

how could they test ? if I have it towed to house is it easy to replace ? looks like it's in the tank?

what if it's just realy or fuel filter is loaded up from last bit of tank- fuel  could running tank dry have fried fuel pump? any Ideas on hotwiring the pump to check ? not sure where relay is or fuse for taht matter.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

7. If it does NOT run for the 2 seconds the fault is 90% the fuel pump.
