Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: engine stalling, buick century, speed 3

Question
My sister has an 88 Buick Century. It stalls when put in gear when it is cold. It also stalls when the brakes are put on or the lights are put on. What could be the problem? It is not the alternator or battery. Both have been checked. Idling has been adjusted and seemed to help but not cure problem. Car does not stall as much when it has been running for a while.

Answer
Do you know how to feel if the over drive is engaging when you start driving from a stop as it has a slight bump feeling to it around 40 to 50 mph's.

Do this :

1. Start driving the car until it gets warm.
2. get up to about 50 mph and with your right foot maintain this speed.

3. Using your left foot, Slightly apply the brake pedal until you feel a little bump like you ran over something. Then release the brake pedal and you should feel another bump this would be the over drive re-engaging. Do this several times until you get the feel of the bump as you apply and release the brake pedal.

NOTE: It is vital that you maintain your speed. just step on the brake just enough so as you cannot feel the brakes applying.

let me know.
