Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1991 Park Avenue - Crank Pulley Removal, crank pulley, engine cranks

Question
Hi,

I need to replace a crank pulley but I'm not sure if the crank bolt is standard clockwise threading or reverse threading?  Also, should I be able to take this off with a impact wrench or is there a trick to keeping the motor from rotating?  Thanks for any help on this.

Answer
Hi Alfred

The bolt removes counter clockwise, its on there with about 250 lbs of torque and can be a bear to take off, even with an impact gun,one way is to use a breaker bar 1/2 drive type with an impact socket, use a large prybar to lock the flywheel in place and use all the might to remove, attempt the impact gun first though.
Another way that will remove it is to use a breakerbar with an impact socket rotate the engine clockwise and rest the breakerbar on the frame ft portion, bump the starter over and it will break free, the engine cranks in the clockwise rotation, word of caution, keep all away from the bar and keep away from the radiator, and only bump the starter just enough that the bolt is lossened.if you need help contact me,Thanks
