1990 98 regency brougham 3800. I recently ran out of gas for the first time-EVER. It started the next day not starting like it usually does it seems like it was flooding itself when I hold the pedal to the floor it will start good but as soon as I let go of the ignition it just dies If i do it enough times it will eventually stay started.  Or if it does start right away its because the throttle is higher because when Im driving the car gains speed without touching the gas.Never had any of these problems before I ran out of gas. I changed air filter, fuel filter and did the test for the fuel pump and it's fine. Could it be spark plugs? Ive had car 1 1/2years put on about 30 000km have never changed them.

Answer -
By "test for the fuel pump"...did you test it with a gauge while running?
Not good to run it out of gas because before it actually runs out, it has run very low for a period of time, and the gas flow is used to cool and lubricate the pump.
But the proof of the pump is with the test gauge, so make sure the pressure is up to proper spec for that engine.

The spark plugs shouldn't just start having a problem because you ran out of fuel, but changing them sure wouldn't hurt anything, and just might help. Change wires also.

That "holding the pedal to the floor" is probably placing it in a clear flood mode, so it may be actually flooding. I might run some injector cleaner through it.

The check I did for the fuel pump was listening to see if you can hear it from taking the gas cap off.  Can you check it with a gauge yourself and if so how and what kind off gauge do you need.  Could it be a result of bad gas.  I was told that holding the pedal to the floor before you turn the igniton to start it would help to start it because it suppose to cut off the flow of gas If it is flooded Is this true or not? Thanks Van.

Answer
Hello Connie,
Holding it to the floor should cut off the fuel flow on many injection systems. It is a clear-flood mode, which stops the fuel, but also lets in a large amount of air, which also helps evaporate a flooded condition.

It could be the result of bad gas. Run a bottle of injector cleaner through with some gas. I usually add a bottle to about half a tank of gas and run it for a while.

The pressure needs to be tested with a fuel pressure tester.
Some parts houses will even loan you one, but if not, they can be rented at a rental company.
A parts house might even connect and test it for you.
You will also need to know what engine and type of injection system you have, so you test for the correct pressure. Too much pressure can make it run as bad as too little.
There is a test port on the fuel rail where you check it.
