Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Wrong fluid put in engine, oldsmobile 88, brake fluid

Question
I took my 1995 Oldsmobile 88 Royale V6 - 3800 series ll engine in for an oil change at Delta Sonic, after driving the car for 1250 miles the engine developed a knocking noise. I checked the oil and found that the fluid level was a quart low and was not oil!!! It was a didn't look like oil, smell like oil, or feel like oil. It was clear and didn't feel slippery and didn't smell like oil. I called the place where I had the oil change done and they told me to bring the car back to them which I did. They changed the fluid that was in the car to oil they said as a courtesy and I filed a complaint. I was told that the noise I heard was not in the engine but a bad pulley. I asked if I should take the car to a mechanic and was told to wait until I heard from them that the pulley would eventually break and the engine would stop.Well' it stopped and it was not a pulley...the connecting rod and bearing were found in the oil pan. I sent the oil from the oil pan out for testing and the only abnormality was a count of 36 in the aluminum column.
Would putting brake fluid or transmission fluid in the motor cause this to happen?
