Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Hard starting, oil pressure switch, olds aurora

Question
I have a 97 Olds Aurora. Recently, it takes about 5-6 seconds of cranking before starting. Have not noticed any other problems.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Jim,
I would check the fuel pressure, to see if the pump is running when the key is turned on. You should also be able to hear it run. Just turn the key to run, not start, and listen back near the tank. The pump in the tank should run for about three seconds when the key is turned on.
There is an oil pressure switch that will run the pump when oil pressure reaches 4 PSI, and that might be what your car is doing.
If so, and you don't hear the pump running with the key, then the pump relay may be bad. That is the purpose of the oil pressure switch....a backup system.

If the pump does run with the key, I would check for a dirty fuel filter.
