Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 87 ciera engine trouble 2.5L, valve cover gasket, vacuum hoses

Question
Hi, i have a 1987 ciera wagon, with the 2.5L engine, it ran fine for 3 months that i had it, and then one day it started to sputter at a traffic light on the way to work, when i went to leave work, it would run just fine in park or nuetral, but as soon as i put it in any drive gears it would barely have any power or stall, i believe it was a miss, but it wouldnt stop, which meant i had no power, and also the shift points seemed to be messed up, when i got it home i left it sit for a month, now that i go to trouble shoot it, it now has this miss type of problem throughout every transmission function,  I found a good bit of water in the intake tube and seemed that the throttle body was damp. i had a friend who was a gm tech try to help me and we replaced the plugs, and sprayed water on the coil pack, it didnt arch and also there was spark at all cyclinders, a few plugs seemed to be burning hot, so he said it was most likely a problem with the throttle body or a peice or sensor with in it, i found a used throttle body assembly, and i would like to put that on to see if it corrects the problem, also the valves do not look bad as i have to replace the valve cover gasket.  what possible problems could this be and am i on the ryte track buying this throttle body?

Answer
Hi Andy,
I would check the fuel pressure, and probably change the filter.
Check the vacuum hoses for leaks also.

Any chance there is water in the gas tank?
When you change the filter, catch about a pint of gas in a real clean glass jar, and let it sit. The water will pool in the bottom in just a few minutes.
