Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: stalling, cutlass supreme, vacuum leak

Question
I HAVE A 82  CUTLASS SUPREME AND IT IS RUNNING GOOD BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN AT IDLE IT WILL CUT OFF AND I DONT KNOW WHY I CAN START IT RIGHT UP AGAIN BUT IT JUST STOPS SOMETIMES AND IT SEEMS TO RUN BETTER WHEN IT IS HOT WHY DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE STALLING LIKE THAT UNSUSPECTEDLY COULD IT BE THE CARBURATOR NEEDS ADJUSTMENT OR WHAT PLEASE HELP THANKS

Answer
Hello Marcel,
Carb adjustment is possible, especially since it only does it at idle.
It could also be the EGR valve. It opens during normal operation, but if it happens to close on a little piece of carbon as you are slowing down, it will act like a vacuum leak, which could lean out the idle mixture to where it can't run. Then upon starting the car, it could open and reclose properly the next time.
It could be dirty, or it could be worn out, and just not seal sometimes.

Another thought is the brake booster. If it is occasionally leaking vacuum when the brakes are applied, like at a stop sign, it would cause the same situation.
