Tom, My wife's car (1999 Buick LeSabre V6, Automatic Climate Control) has a problem with the A/C and Heater. This winter she complained that occasionally the car would not blow hot air. She only drives a short distance to work and since we live in the south and the problem only occured once in a while I never had it checked. Now that it is summer (and really hot) the problem is with the A/C. Same thing...only on occasion and most times in the hottest part of the day the A/C does not come on at all. She called me at work last night saying it had quit and then this morning while on her way to work she said, "it just came on like magic." Actually it sort of scared her as she was driving and thought it was off and then the fan suddenly starting blowing on high. As you can tell it's really a ghosting problem and I haven't a clue as to what's going on. When it's working it blows cold air. Same thing in winter when it's working it blows hot air. I am ready to take it to the shop, but I have found over the years that you are asking for trouble when you take something in to be worked on when it's not presently exhibiting any symptoms. I can fix most things when I know what's wrong. Have you got any answers for me?

Is your ONLY problem is that the BLOWER MOTOR is NOT turning ON and providing air to the vents ?.

When it is working, Does the air come from the proper vents when you select the different vent options ?.

has there been ANY kind of work of ANY KIND WHAT-SO-EVER done on the car prior to this problem and if so, WHAT was done ?.

Tom I am not sure if its just the blower motor not kicking in or not. The wife says that when it's acting up she adjusts the buttons on the controls and the digital display works but no air is provided. So far the outage only occurs sporadically and seems to cure itself at some point...most times by surprise.

When it's working air will come from the proper vent selected. You can change the air vent discharge selections of your preference, fan speed, as well as the temperature setting (when it's working) and all operate properly.

Most recent maintenance was topping off the radiator after noticing it was low on coolant. Also regularly scheduled oil changes. Last year I had the spark plugs/plug wire changed and a new serpentine belt installed. 2 years ago I had the brakes reworked. About 4 years ago the air was not blowing cold and the dealership found a freon leak on a schrader connection. That was fixed, the system recharged and has been providing cold air since. Other than that the car has been trouble free.

Answer
Have the freon level checked in the A/C system, It may need to have freon added to it. I REALLY need to know if the bLOWER FAN is what is NOT operating or NOT as if it is the blower motor operating in this problem your fault would be in the BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL MODULE, But do NOT replace it until we can get some more definate answers to my questions as this MODULE runs about $450.00

LOOK around in the engine compartment for ANY black colored wires (ground wires) that may be loose and tighten them. Especially where there has been previous work performed.
