Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Buick Starting...or not!, transmission slippage, neutral safety switch

Question
hey first of all thank you for your time.   now with that done...   I drive a '93 Buick LeSabre, Correction, When it starts i attempt to drive a 1993 Buick LeSabre.   In the past several months i have been having a little transmission slippage, ATF leaking (known leak) but i check it every day, top off when needed.   About 3 weeks ago i got in the car and started it for the first time of the day, drove less than 1.5 miles turned car off went into store yadda yadda car was off less than 10 minutes.  when i attempted to restart the car i got absolutely nothing.   I DID HAVE plenty of battery.   i got the same response as one might get if they attempted to start a car in gear.   after having the car towed back to my place and letting it set a couple days i was able to get it started but only because i held my foot on the break one hand on the key in start position and my free hand was manipulating the drive selector through the gears P-1 rapidly untill it finaly allowed the car to fire.    since then no troubles. untill i was comming acorss Roosevelt bridge when i stalled the car by slamming on the brakes, i then couldnt get it re started untill about 10 minutes elapsed and had to go through the same process of going through the gears.
after that inident ive had no trubles, here is the shocker, untill today.   i cant get that car started at all.   presents the same exact symptoms/traits as i mentioned earlier, but this time going through the gears aint helping.    what next?  if you say neutral safety switch ill buy it, but i dont know where to look for it on the car.

again thanks for your time sorry for being long winded

Answer
Hi Charlie,
Not long winded at all...great description.
I would want to check the neutral safety switch. It is on the steering column, above the brake pedal.
Probably need to lower the column to get to it, but it is adjustable.
The ignition switch is on the column higher up, but in the same area. It also is a possibility, and also adjustable.
Jumping across the starter terminals when the switch won't work is a quick check, if you can get to it, but by all means, make sure it is in neutral, since jumping like that will start in any gear.

Better plan is to test for voltage, and follow the wire backwards till you find where the voltage isn't getting through.
