Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 91 OLDS CUTLASS CIERRA S/6 CYL. FUEL INJECTED, cutlass cierra, olds cutlass

Question
This vehicle has been run only three to five times in the last couple years. Had to charge battery to start. Once started I noticed it wasn't idling as fast as it should. Then it wouldn't stay running no matter how much throttle I applied. Finally it quit firing completely. I checked the plugs and they are in good shape and dry. If I remove the air filter and spray starting fluid in it, fires up and runs perfect until the starting fluid is gone. I'm leaning torwards the fuel pump being the culprit but wonder if it could be something else since I'm not that familiar with fuel injection.
Thanks in advance. Vehicle has 71,000. miles on it.

Answer
Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.

let me know.
