I have replaced 2-fuel pumps in this 1988 olds cutlass and 2 modules, new fuel relay, tune up and it only will run for about 20 mins.I have a 2.8 engine in it,I disconected the thruttle senser and it indles high but will run for a while but it will be hard to start again untill the next morning and starts. could this be the fuel regulator,or other sensor. Thanks Brian

Answer
NEVER disconnect ANY SENSORS when the vehicle is running as you will drive the computer NUTS.

What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a vacuum line may have been knocked loose or a wire connection came loose, Look around in the area where work was performed.

Is or has the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated ?.

The FIRST thing you are going to have to determine is if your problem is FUEL related and or no ignition to the SPARK PLUGS. Once this is established, Then we can proceed with further diagnostics.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.

However, Sometimes if you continously try and start the engine 3 timse for 15 seconds continously and the vehicle starts, the fuel pump relay may be the fault.

Is this a FUEL INJECTED vehicle with 2 fuel injectors mounted on a throttle body or is it CARBURATED ?.

GIve me more information on the vehicle.
