Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Alternator, autohelp, auto parts store

Question
I have a 1991 Olds Aurorawith 63,000 miles. The alternator has open diodes and must be replaced. The mechahanic gave me a bid of $660.00 parts and labor.  I have heard of this in European and Japanese cars but not American. What do you think?

Answer
If the FAULT is POSITIVELY in the alternator you can purchase a rebuilt alterntor for about $225.00 at any auto parts store and it only takes a minimal amount of mechanical experience to replace it in less than an hour.

In my opinion the price you were quoted is way to high.
