What a nightmare car! It now has a new or rebuilt power steering pump, alternator, starter/solinoid, radiator, harmonic balancer, water pump, battery cables...and guess what? intermittantly it won't turn over. it has lights/power etc but will not crank. The starter is a week old. It's my Mother in Law's car, so I'm never around when it won't start.  I'm thinking it's the ignition switch or neutral safety switch. Can you tell me where they are, how I get to them etc.. Thanking you in advance
Answer -
Please DEFINE WON'T TURN OVER. Are you saying that the engine CRANKS but just won't START or are you saying that when you turn the ignition key you only get a single click sound or you hear nothing ?.

WHERE did you get the new starter and did you have it tested BEFORE you installed it ?.

It won't turn over, crank or anything else, turn the key and nothing(lights are on radio plays etc) but engine will not turn over.....other times turn the key and it starts right up...Got the starter at autozone

OK, There is a simple test that you need to do for me and give me the result. You will need a helper to help you.

1. Locate the single PURPLE wire that is attcahed to the smaller post of the starter solenoid.

2. Attach a KNOWN GOOD 12 volt test light to theis PURPLE wire and touch the probe of the test light to theis PURPLE WIRE.

3. While holding the test light tip on this PURPLE wire have your helper try and START the vehicle and see if the test light illuminates. DOES IT ?.

Tom the problem is that some times it does start right up....take this morning when my mother in law brought the car over to see if I could find the ignition switch....she turned the car off, came inside.. I went out turned the key..and nothing, the lights ,radio etc are on but the car does not turn over... a couple minutes later I turned the key and it started right up and continued to start up time after time? So for your test to work, wouldn't I have to hit it at a time when it isn't starting?  are you implying that you don't think its the ignition switch?

This is what we are trying to determine by testing the PURPLE wire on the "S" terminal.

If you do HAVe battery volatge to it when you try and start the vehicle this would indicate a solenoid or starter problem.

If you do NOT have battery vltgae at this same wire, then we can test the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

have to tried manipulating the gear shift lever back and forth in the PARK and NEUTRAL position ?.

did that and it didn't seem to do anything on a immediate basis..however the car did eventually start. Can we go ahead and test electrical portion of the ignition switch?

SURE, But your going to have to tell me the YEAR-MAKE-MODEL and ENGINE SIZE of the vehicle again as I get 50 to 60 questions DAILY and can't remember who goes with what problem and what vehicle.

Hi,

You have already stated that you do NOT have battery voltage at the PURPLE wire at the STARTER post with the ignition switch HELD in the START position. If this is TRUE Then there is a lengthy test procedure thru different connectors and switches that you MUST have an electrical schematic and the diagnostic procedures to perform.

IF you can read an electrical schematic and perform simple electrical tests we can provide you with all of the necessary electrical schematics and diagnostic procedures that you will need.

The multi-page information that you receive is the EXACT information that is provided to the car dealerships by the manufacturers via their respectful service manuals.
If your NOT sure of what to test, we will help you until a resolution is found as long as you perform the test proceduresIF you F you a In IN order for us to provide you with the information you need, we have to research the information thru our extensive library and notes, Scan the information, Which could be many pages and e-mail them to you.

There is a ONE TIME $12.00 fee for this information. We will send any additional information at NO CHARGE as long as it is in reference to the same subject matter. This fee can be paid to our Pay Pal account being:

Actually I indicated on several occasions that the problem was intermittent. Sometimes you turn the key and it starts right up, other times it's dead with the exception that the lights/radio etc work. Now if I tested the "purple" wire at the starter during one of those times it started right up...what would that tell me about the ignition switch...that it worked that one time. This whole question and answer thing has gotten pretty frustrating. I asked initially where the ignition and neutral switches were located and how to get to them and now after 5 days of everything but the answer to my question..you offer to sell me schematics...
