Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: cooling fan in engine compartment, coolant temperature, speed system

Question
2000,olds,premiere van,3.4 v6, at what tempeture setting does the cooling fan go on.dealers states half way between max and 3/4 mark on tempeture gage. do you think this is right ?

Answer
I can't be sure because I don't know if you have a 2 speed system or not, however the way General Motors dose this is really quite standard throughout with systems like yours.
Generally the two speed system turns on the low speed fan at 210 degrees and that may be all you need but if its still heating up the high speed fan will come on at 225 degrees. IF you don't have a two speed system it will come on around 225 degrees. The gage is really an indicator so I would just be guessing and so would anyone else. The way to verifier this is to connect the engines computer with a scanner which most shops have. Using the scanner you could see the coolant temperature as the computer sees it and look at what point it comes on and chart that with what the gauge reads. John
