Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: disappearing oil, valve stem seals, olds alero

Question
I have a 2001 Olds Alero with the 2.4L engine. I currently change the oil every 4000 mile, but after about 2000 miles I have to add a quart of oil. The car does not leak or smoke at all, so I don't know how or why the car is loosing a quart of oil. Do you have any ideas?

Answer
You really only have 4 choices:

Your:

1. losing it externally.
2. Using it internally.
3. Burning it in the combustion chamber(s).
4. A combination of all 3.

You could run a cylinder leak down test on all the cylinders to see if any are losing pressure within the cylinders.

Abnormal spark plug electrode discolorization is also something to look for.

1. Weak/cracked valve stem seals.
2. broken/cracked piston oil rings.

Your going to have to have a qualifed tech run some tests to make a positive disgnosis.
