I have a 97 Le Sabre With a Speedometer that works intermitantly. I have replace the speed sensor with no luck. Does the guage need to be replaced or is there something else that could be checked.
Answer -
ANALOG or DIGITAL display ?. What ELSE does not work on the vehicle on within the cluster ?.

What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a vacuum line may have been knocked loose or a wire connection came loose, Look around in the area where work was performed..

Analog display! The speedometer is the only guage in the whole cluster having any problems. When you turn on the key the needle come up of the rest, but may or may not work. This problem did not start in conjunction with any other work, I replaced the speed sensor after it started.

Answer
IF you had a problem with the speed sensor, you would have received an illumination of the CHECK ENGINE light on the dash and the cruise control would most likely have NOT worked.

Your problem is in most cases within the speedometer cluster wire connections or with the STEPPER MOTOR of which makes the speedometer needle operate.

There is also a rare possibility that you have a problem within the PCM of which provides the electrical control to the stepper motor.

In MOST cases the problem is with the stepper motor within the cluster, But it could be one of the above other faults.

I have also seen some cases where there was a fault within the microprocessor within the instrument cluster and the complete cluster had to be replaced at a cost of approx $400.00 just for the replacement cluster.

the ONLY way to determine exactly what is at fault is to test the components and wiring.
