Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Emergency Brake, buick lesabre, hand lever

Question
I have a 1987 Buick LeSabre. I think the car has been taken care of pretty well and its in pretty good shape.  Just getting old like the rest of us.  My son pulled the emergency brake and he thinks it snapped.  There is no longer tension on the handle and the brake is locked on to the wheel (not totally but it burns if you try to drive it)  How do I release the darn thing so I can drive it to get it fixed.  Does disengaging the emergency brake affect the other brakes?  Can I somehow loosen its grip so I can drive.  With three sons you'd think that at least one of them would like to tinker with cars.  But no. I would very much appreciate any help you can give me.

Answer
HI VIV, A LITTLE CONFUSED HERE DIDN,T KNOW THIS YEAR HAD A HAND LEVER TO APPLLY THE PARK BRAKE.ON MOST YOU APPLY WITH FOOT AND RELEASE WITH HAND LEVER.BUT EITHER WAY THESE BRAKES ARE SELDOM USED,AND THEN WHEN THEY ARE APPLIED THEY STICK AND BREAK .HERE IS A SUGGESTION THAT MAY WORK.TRY BACKING CAR UP AND GENTLY APPLYING BRAKES THIS will sometimes do the trick.otherwise you will need to remove rear wheels and disconnect the cable going to the e brake rod.the cable goes in through the back of the brake drum.i hope this helps billymac
