Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: poss. tranny problem?, couple feet, clunk

Question
First of all, thanks for your time to read this. Now for the hard part, While driving my 1991 Olds 98 Regency on the highway, all of the sudden my rpm's sky-rocketed and my speed decreased.  There was no knock or clunk or clattering or any noise at all. I pulled of the highway and shut the car off. Then maybe 1 out of 10 times the car would go (go into gear?) and actually move but only for a a couple feet. I had the car towed home and when i loked under the hood, the passenger side half shaft was really shiny and looked new which is odd because it is as old as the car. I was thinking poss. replacing the pass. side half shaft seeing that the driver side was replaced 4 years ago. The car sat for over 3 years after that and when this problem occured the car was only on the road for a couple weeks. You have to let me know where I can send you a case of beer for helping me out and oh yeah, don't forget the kind of beer you drink.  Thanks alot - prompt notice would greatly appreciated
