Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Time For a New Timing Chain?, oldsmobile cutlass ciera, 1991 oldsmobile cutlass ciera

Question
Hello Billy,
I haved owned my 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
(6 cyl.,3.0L)for 8 years now.It is the best car I have owned. It blew head gaskets once because I didn't watch the coolant and severly overheated. But after that I had no further problems. It now has 168,650 miles and is still going strong.I have heard on some model cars when they have high milage the timing chain (or belt) can break and cause severe engine damage. Is this true for my Olds? Are there any warning signs that the belt or chain is about to go?
The car had 99,050 mi.when I bought it.I don't know if the previous owners had put on a new one or not.Would you recommend I have a belt or chain put on?
Thank you so much for taking the time to assist me.

Answer
hi elizabeth.yes on some cars this is true .but yours no your car has a steel chain, and hardly ever break.if it goes bad such as stretching which is normal wear.it will run bad be very sluggish.and normally will create a metalic rattle in the timeing chain.my advice if your car runs fine then just maintain it and drive it .but i am sorry to say nothing last forever, lol.so sometime it will lay down.and it seems like it don,t owe you anything.the things i would reccomend, haveing checked .are. brakes steering and suspension trans service.exhaust belts and hoses.tires.these are the things miles wear the most.and you can have them repaired as your schedule permits.ty please vote for me billymac
