Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: failure to hold a charge on an 83 Riviera, speed decreases, loose wire

Question
Hi,

I have an 83 Riviera that I have replaced the alternator, the water pump and the main pulley on.  It also has a new battery in it.  No matter what I try the car cannot seem to hold it's charge. When I have the plug connected at the back of the alternator the engine speed decreases and it makes that high pitched noise like belts are loose or slipping.  However, if I leave the plug out the noise stops but after a while the car begins to loose it's charge.  I cannot seem to find a broken or loose wire.  We now need to charge the car every couple of days to keep it running.

Thanks,

Tom
