Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 2001 Olds Bravada, smart trak, trak system

Question
Mr. McMillen: Thank you for your voulenteer support. I know your profile says you have been involved in ford and chrysler, so I don't know if you can answer this or not. I am looking at an '01 Olds Bravada with 42,250 miles on it. This vehicle has the AWD "Smart Trak" system. Is this system better, as good, or worse then a conventional "4X4" vehicle. Have there been many problems with these and are they reliable. How do these sytems work as opposed to 4x4 vehicles. Also, any additional pertinent info concerning this issue would be helpful. Thank you sir.      Tony Kilgore

Answer
hi tony and ty.well there has been some problems with the smart trac systems,it turns out they are not nearly as smart as gm had hoped.lol they have incorporated the speed sensors for the abs system with the transfer case.so if you have a prob with your abs your 4wheel drive usually will not work properly.and when do you have probs with abs ,in the winter when your tires slide on the ice your abs will not function properly.which kind of defeats the purpose of 4 wheel drive if it only works right in the summer.but let me give you an example i have 20 mquestions to answe4r today about 25 percent are on this vehicle.lol i am going to have to say the smart trac is common for problems however not normally expensive problems but still an inconvience for you.and also the miles on this unit i would suspect you probably wouldn,t see too many problems for another 50.000 miles so use this info how ever you feel comfortable.ty for writeing billymac
