Hi Billy,
My winter vehicle is a 1990 Buick Regal, 2 door, 3.1L V6. The problem I've been having the last couple of winters is that the heat is lousy. It's producing some warmth, but it's far from hot. I've replaced the thermostat twice in the last 2 years, each time from different suppliers. Both have been winter thermostats. I'm on the 3rd thermostat now. I've had a radiator flush performed, I'm not losing any coolant and I'm not having any other mechanical problems. The motor has never overheated.I'm guessing by the fact that I'm not losing any coolant that the heater core is also fine. My coolant is mixed to protect to 25 below zero so I know that it's not too thick. Anything you might be able to suggest would be absolutely the best xmas present I could hope for. Thanks for your help.

hi gerry.stop trying to corner the t stat market.lol try this when the eng is at norm operateing temp as in 185 and 3.1,s like about 200 touch the radiator hose if it is 185 you will be able to touch it but cannot comfortly hold your hand there.if it is hot check the bottom is it also hot? if so t stat is working fine.now go to your heater hoses where they are going through the firewall.are they both hot ?is one hotter then the other? if they are both hot .core is ok.if there is a hot one and a lot cooler one core is plugged.if this is the case flushing will not work core will have to be replaced.now if these hoses are hot your prob is a blend door this door is located in the heater box but you can access the rod that opens it.start car get under dash have someone change temp selector from hot to cold watch for what happens in the heater box.you will see or hear a vac mtr opening and closeing a door pull this rod or push it you will hear it clicking as it is adjusting.if this don,t help you write back we will figure it out please rate my help ty billymac

Hi Billy, again thanks for your help. But we're no further ahead.I checked the hoses for heat, going in and out of heater core. Hot both ways. I also checked the blender door and i could hear the door clicking both ways while setting the switch from hot to cold and back again, so that piece is working fine. I'm still getting the same warm air. What's next? If this were almost any other car, I would have already removed the heater core/box to see what's going on in there but it will be such a pain to get in there. I have the Haynes book for this car already. What you think?

Answer
hi gerry.well the heater motor blows across the hot heater core.and to change the temp,it opens a door the blend air door and mixes cold air with hot air.it does not change the temp of the core.the only other alternative is that something is covering the core.paper or something take the heater motor out not that hard look in the hole where you removed the motor from.you can see the heater core.does it look like it is corroded.or restricted in any way.the core can flow normal and still be plugged or corroded over this will actually insulate the core and you will have warm air.if this is not any help get back with me and i will research a little  billymac
