Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: buick not starting., mass airflow sensor, shade tree mechanic

Question
friend has a 94 lesabre 3.8 v6  . i'ma  good shade tree mechanic been doing it for years but this has me stumped. he bought the car from his employer. the car had been sitting for around a year or so. come to find out when he bought it, the mice had been in it and chewed up some wires. He replaced all of them that were chewed etc. He Tried starting it and it started, and ran , but kinda rough. eventually he drove it to town to get it inspected and licensed and it died. He replaced the coilpack and wires but still nothing. So i took a look into it and the fuel pump wasn't even coming on when key was on. so i powered up the fuel pump and i'ts good. i proceeded to track down wires from the fuel pump and found that it had been spliced into at about the rear drivers seat to the firewall where the harness comes out just to the right of the relay cener. i tracked the wire to power the pump to what i am assuming is the egr. never seen one like it. i'ts mounted if looking at the front of the car, on the right hand side (drivers side) right in front of the mass airflow sensor in the intake , it has a steel tube running to the intake just in front of the mass airflow sensor.  This has a 5 prong plug on top. it has 12 volts to it via one wire and around 5 volts or so via another wire in the plug, but when i power up the wire to the fuel pump , wala. the fuel pump works. so i took off the piece and shook it and something rattles inside it. i've never heard of an egr that controls the fuel pump. one other questoin. the relay to the fuel pump is behind the passenger kick panel. and 2 wires were off of it. so replace those to where they were missing at . help... not sure where to go from here. possibly the egr or whatever this piece is i'm looking at........ thx. much appreciation for help.

Answer
hey darrell, wow i am impressed you have done your homework lol.the part ou described is indeed the egr valve and should have a 5 volt and a 12 volt wire there.here is why.turn on the key.first powers the ecm .now the ecm powers everything that needs to be powered at that time.you could actually power several things that are connected to that circuit and the pump will run.check the ecm fuses.all fuses.check orange wire at batt .check wires at ecm.if unable to find prob.run power to the fuel pump relay when key is on.check for 5 volt ref signal at cranksensor plug from computer side.plug in check 5 volt ref comeing out of crank sensor.if pump runs car don,t module or cranksensor.check inertia switch and fuel pump fuse.good luck let me know thanks billymac
