Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Short drive without radiator, etc., oil seepage, broken bolt

Question
Hi,

I am in process of replacing a leaking water pump cover gasket.  With the radiator, etc. off, I have access to a lot of stuff that isn't usually accessible.  The engine here is very dirty, both from coolant leakage, and oil seepage I guess.  I want to drive my truck 1/4 mile to a car wash so that I can clean the engine thoroughly.  Is there any problem doing this without the radiator, fan, alternator, etc. installed?  It seems to me that as long as the engine doesn't overheat, there would be no problem, but I don't know about driving with the coolant system hoses open to air.  Since one of the bolts broke, and I'm having problems extracting it, I may have to drive it 2 miles to a repair shop anyway.  [This brings up a 2nd question: what do you do when the bolt extractor breaks in the bolt?]  This is an '87 Toyota basic pickup (the Toyota guys are maxed out, and this is a general question anyway).

Thank you in advance,
Scott

Answer
hi scott.yes drive it as long as eng don,t get hot rather overheat.but the real prob with this is the water hitting all these aluminum parts and possibly cracking or warping.my advice would be take the truck to the car wash leave it there for a cpl hours time for cooling down.wrap the distributor with a plastic bag so to keep it dry.the broken bolt only one way scott drill it out and retap the hole.be sure to use a small bit for a pilot and increase the bit gradually.and drill at a lower speed this will help not to break bit.good luck scott.please take a min of your time to rate my help it is important to me ty billymac
