Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Ignition wont turn, oldsmobile cutlass, seat on top

My boyfriend has a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Just two days ago, he went to turn the key and it wouldnt even turn, you can hear the dinging noise when he puts the key in but it will not turn. He tore the dash apart to look in there but could not see what was wrong. He tried turning the steering wheel, putting his foot on the brake and turning it and nothing happened still. do you have any helpful advice. It was running perfect before this.

hi ,staci..well this is a common prob with this vehicle.tell him to put the key in and very slowly and gently move wheel back and forth while trying to turn key.this is actually a anti theft device that has malfuntioned.also move the tilt and try and turn key gently .be sure key is not damaged or worn.if none of this works.tell him to remove bolts holding steering wheel to dash should be four let coloumn drop down to seat.on top of steering shaft he will find a elec switch loosen bolts on this try and turn key if not then remove this part and try and turn key if it turns replace this switch..good luck if none of this works write back.please take a sec to rate my service  ty billymac
