Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Mysterious breakdown, olds cutlass ciera, olds cutlass

Question
I have a 1990 Olds cutlass ciera,3.3L,6cyl.engine.It has 200,143 miles on it.I bought it 2 years ago and never had any problems with it.But one day while I was driving it the temperature warning light came on.So I pulled over and turned the engine off.I raised the hood, surprised to find the engine was not hot at all.But when I tried to start it, it wouldn't start. It acted as if it was out of gas,but it wasn't.So I had to tow it home.Later I discovered it isn't getting spark.Could the engine control model went out?what could be other reasons it's not getting spark? Why did the temp light come on and it wasn't overheating?I'd like to get this car fixed. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Answer
Hi James,
It is possible, but I doubt it.
It might be the wire from the temperature sensor may have gotten against the exhaust system, and melted through, shorting it. Then, if the ECM detects the hot reading, it could keep the spark from happening, to protect the engine, thinking it is hot.
Check all the wires, and see if one might also just have rubbed through and be touching.
If it is, the temp may show hot when you turn the key to run, even with a cold engine. Have someone watch the temp indicator while you wiggle the wires.
