Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Nonfunfuntional Internal Blower Fan, buick skylark, resistor pack

Question
Hi, I have a 1985 Buick Skylark, 6 cylinder, 2.8L, 2BL, Sedan.
The internal heater WORKS as far as providing Heat and Air, but the Blower isn't working.
I don't have the owners manual to find out (which Fuse) it would be to check.
Could you please tell me if you know what FUSE to check on this model? Plus.....if it is NOT the fuse, what could the problem be? If it is the blower, can you please tell me where this would be located so I can replace it?

Thanks much!!!

Answer
Hi Tom,
The blower is in the heater housing. It is normally accessed from under the hood, in the engine compartment, on the passengers side, although it could possibly be accessed up above the passengers side floorboard on some vehicles. But I am almost positive yours is under the hood.
There are several wires associated with the blower, due to the fact that there is a resistor pack used to change the speed of the blower, but ultimately, the power is delivered to the blower with just one wire,(purple) and sometimes, depending on what material the blower is mounted on, there is a ground wire.(black).
Once you find the blower, checking for power there, and a good ground there, will tell you if the blower motor is the problem, or fuses, resistors, switches, wires, etc.
The power wire will be Purple, and the ground wire will be Black.
You can unplug the connector at the motor, and use jumper wires from the battery directly to the blower motor to test it. That will run it at full speed. If it runs when jumped, but not through the normal controls, then tracing the wires backward may be necessary.

As for the fuses, a quick check of all the fuses can be made, but there is a fusible link for high speed, which is separate from the fuse for the other speeds and resistors, so if it doesn't run on ANY speed, going directly to the motor with a test light and the jumpers can narrow it down pretty quickly, and with the age of that car, the blower motor is what I would suspect.

Good luck,
Van
