Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: AC/Heater on 1984 Buick Century, resistor pack, buick century

Question
Mr. St. John,
First of all thanks so much for your help. I have a 1984 Buick Century 3.0 V6 w/ 76,000 miles and the heater and AC don't work. Nothing comes out when you turn it on. The vent doesn't work either. I determined that a fuse might be blown, so I replaced the 25 fuse with another 25, and it blew that too. I then replaced it with a 30 fuse. It worked for about 5 minutes, and then it blew that one as well.

Summer is coming on, and I really need AC. I don't know if I should pay to have the car diagnosed and repaired, or just get a new vehicle, because it is 20 years old. It was running fine before this happened, and I love the car-it's my first car and will be hard to let go of.

Thanks,
James

Answer
James,

I would remove the power wire to the blower motor and try the system. if the fuse blows, replace the blower but just turn the heat on not the A/C at all. If the fuse blows I would remove the connector/wire connected to the A/c compressor and try it, if the fuse blows the clutch/compressor is faulty. I also then would see if the fuse blows on any setting but "High". The system uses a resistor pack on each setting but high. If it blows with the compressor and the blower disconnected and on anything but high I would replace then the resistor pack. If it blows in the above conditions but on high, well maybe the blower relay. Surely its hard to diagnose on line but those are my thoughts.
