Pontiac Repair: Oil Change, pontiac sunfire, 2000 pontiac sunfire

Question
Hello. I have a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire and I just changed the oil myself. I change it every 6 months but I only put on 1,386 miles from the last oil change 6 months ago. Do you know if the oil is still good if it is just sitting? Should I wait longer, say a year to change my oil based on the small amount of miles I put on my car? My step dad works on cars and he doesn't know. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi jenifer.

My rule of thumb is every 3,000 or 3 months which ever comes first. If you drive it that little I would stretch it to 5 months and change it. condensation in the oil cuase sludge to form that is going to be more of an issue for you then dirt in the oil from it running. of course if you use a synthetic blend or a full synthetic oil you can go even further.  for what you told me the milage you put on it in a year 2 changes a year would be okay I would say.
