Pontiac Repair: 1992 grand prix, fuel pump, filer

Question
My son drove home from work on empty. He stopped and put gas in the car and parked the car. The next day it would not start. It is getting fuel but very little pressure. I thought maybe fuel pump, just want to check with someone else as I'm not always right any more due to age.

Answer
Hi Valerie:

well chances are that due to the age of the car and the fact it was run very low on fuel any dirt that could have accumulated over Time in the tank could have been sucked up into the pump and damaged it. that engine needs approx 40 PSI. of pressure to run properly. if it is much lower then that it will not run. I would think it's a fare assumption that is what happened here. I would also suggest change the fuel filer as well. a plugged/restricted filter will kill a brand new pump in no time. Good luck:-)
