Pontiac Repair: Pontiac 6000LE 1991, freeze plugs, freeze plug

Question
My car heated up and I made it to the shop just as the light came on so I feel I made it in time to avoid any further damage.
The mechanic says that the freeze plug needs replaced. States that they have to pull the engine and several parts to do so. He expects to find more damage but can't say for sure until he tears it all apart. Est cost so far is $2000.  Since this is my only car and I have put new tires on it, replaced the serpentine belt, gotten oil changes regularly. Mileage is about 145,000 or so.  We are so scraped for money right now. I appreciate your help.

Answer
Hi Patty:

your sort of in a bad spot. $200.00 for freeze plugs is not a bad price. I'll assume this is a 4 cylinder engine in this car? If so chances are that if you overheated it it will still be okay and you didn't cuase moe damage. If it's a V6 iw ould pretty much bet on the fact that the repaiur will be more extensive. Your mechanice is good in being up front with you that it may cost you more. There is an unknown. If it is just indeed rotted out freeze plugs you lucked out indeed. Sorry I can't help you out more but with out seeing the car I can't tell you for sure what the extent of any damage could be. good luck :-)
