Pontiac Repair: eratic or misreading fuel gauge on 2002 gp gt, fuel level sensor, fuel system treatment

Question
What can I do to diagnose and repair this problem?
Is the sending unit in the tank, if so do I have to lower tank to get to it
or is there another way?
Also if left for awhile could fuel pump get damaged?
appreciate any help
thanks

Answer
Hey Keith:

More then likley the issue is with the fuel level sensor it's self. It can be replaced seprate from the fuel pump module assembly. you can access it from inside the trunk. pull the carpet up and ther is a tin plate remove that plate and the sender unit is right under the plate. only use a GM AC Delco replacement part. you will not damage the pump if your careful take it apart. not fixing it will not damage the pump unless you run the car out of gas and it sucks up any crud that may be at the bottom of the tank. when you do fix it you may want to use a bottle of GM fuel system treatment it has a protectant in it for the fuel level sensor. I suggest using it 1 time a year 1 bottle will treat up to 20 gallons of fuel I belive. good luck :-)
