Pontiac Repair: 2000 pontiac grand prix horn, pontiac grand prix, google search

Question
Hi Todd,
I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt w 124000 miles and am having a horn issue.  the horn will not work at the steering wheel.  I have checked the fuse and it is good.  I haven't checked the relay, the horn itself, or the ground yet.  however, the horn will sound with the remote locking feature.  If I push the remote button twice, the horn sounds to let me know the doors are locked.  Are these two seperate circuits, or should i be looking at the steering wheel switch as the culprit?  Is it true that the entire airbag needs to be replaced to fix the problem? Any help would be appreciated. If you need more details, let me know.
Thanks, Tim

Answer
Hi Tim:
yes the Horn switch is part of the air bag on that vinatge GP. You need to remove the air bag assembly to check to make sure you have a good ckt. between where the horn wire attaches to the cancel cam though the steering column. This is really not a job for the do it your selfer because you need to take the air bag off. If you feel confident in doing it I would do a google search for disabling the air bag system before I tried this and then once you get the bag off un hook the horn wire usually it's a red one that attaches to the cancel can in the center of the steering wheel you need to push in a turn to get it to come out of the can. then a piece of wire down into the cam and touch it to the metal on the steering wheel the horn should sound it it does the horn switch is bad. if not make sure you have good contact down in the cam and turn the steering wheel about 90 degrees and try again. if it blows then you have a bad cancel cam. The Key fob panic button just verifies that the horn ckts are good from the body control module out not from the body module uop to the horn switch. good luck :-}
