Pontiac Repair: Rear disc brake replacement, caliper piston, pontiac montana

Question
2008 Pontiac Montana sv6. I am having a problem with the brake cylinders. Is there a proper way to push them back?

Answer
Hey Art:
you need a special tool. The caliper piston is actually on a threaded wratchet inside the caliper. That wratchet is what makes the parking brake apply. You need a tool to turn the piston back into the caliper as you apply pressure to the piston. any of the big box auto parts stores have this tool. it's a about a 1" square metal cube that excepts a 3/8" socket extension. This cube has different configuration pints that will fir the slots in the claiper piston. fid the right pin configuration that fits your van and and you push the pixton in with slight pressure turn the caliper piston and it will retract into the caliper bore. then your set to put on a new set of pads. The tool should be less then $10.00 I would expect. Good luck :)
