Pontiac Repair: 93 Grand Am idle surge in park and neutral, chevron techron fuel system, mass airflow sensor

Hello Todd,  My daughter has a 93 Grand Am with a 3300 V6 engine.  When you start the car it idles rough ....a very definite speeding up and slowing down.  If you excellerate just a bit it immediately runs smooth and when driving it runs smooth.  This rough idle seems to happen only in park and neutral.  While idleing, if you shift into reverse or drive the car runs smooth.  Shift back to park and it immediately starts the idle surge again.  It will surge fast and slow maybe 10-15 times while in park and then usually smooth out.  With the rough idle it will sometimes seem to slow enough that the engine may quit, but it does not.  Other than this problem, the car runs real nice.
I thought it might have something to do with the Mass Airflow Sensor so I disconnected the sensor, but the car did exactly the same thing so I assume nothing to do with the sensor?  Any advice would be very helpful.

as I was reading this I was thinking MAF sensor as well. that aside does it do it more so cold or hot? worse cold or hot? a few things it could be #1 make sure it has an orignal equipment PCV valve in it not a fits all. next look for a vacuum leak use some car cleaner and spray around the hoses and connections if the engine spped picks up or the idle smoothes out you found the issue. another thing to do is to clean the throttle body and the throttle body bore as well as the idle control motor. disconnect the battery let the car sit for 5 minutes hook it back up. then turn the key to run for a minute then to off wait 1 minute and then to run again wait then off that will reset the idle control motor. see if that fixes it. other then that there is not much else you can do with out the aid of a true scan tool not a code reader.. one last though when was the last time the fuel filter was repalced? just as maintence you should change that  and use a bottle of Chevron techron fuel system cleaner in the tank follow the directions on the bottle Wally*world sells it cheap around $6.00 a bottle this stuff works wounders. good luck :-}
