Pontiac Repair: engine surging, auto parts stores, maf sensor

I have 2003 Grand Am 3.4litre that has started surging at an idle,and sometimes while traveling will rev up to 5000rpm with no acceleration,it feels like it is stuck in 2nd gear. the vehicle has 60,000 miles

does this happen all the time? has any service engine soon lamp come on? if so have the car scanned for codes at one of the big box auto parts stores. if any codes are stored that is a place to start looking. if no codes are set try unplugging the MAF sensor and see if the surge is gone. it will turn on the SES lamp and it will hesitate when you accelerate from a stop but if the surging is gone that is the issue. good luck :)
