Pontiac Repair: 2001 Grand Prix GTP Limited Edition, fuel level sensor, o rileys

Question
I recently bought a 2001 Grand Prix GTP limited edition (I've been searching for this car for almost 5yrs and all were tore up) from a private seller off craigslist. It has 130,000 miles. After buying I noticed a slight, but noticable, antifreeze leak, the gas gauge is jumpy so the miles until empty display reading is off as well. Yet the temp gauge seems to run more on the cool side rather then hot (around 160-170). The service engine light came on the other day so I took it to o'rileys to use their service engine computer. The code read, "p1404" which the clerk said was a clogged EGR valve. He also told me to google the code because EGR valve may not always be the problem. After reading several blogs it seems that he was right, replacing the EGR valve may not always be the case. I just bought the car a week ago and haven't done any work on it accept add antifreeze a couple times. Before I start to order and replace parts I was hoping you could help diagnose some of these issues. I love this car and hope its not a lemon, but I haven't even got to really test it out and see what it can do in fear that I might blow the motor. thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Alex:
those were nice cars in thier day. it needs the folowing a fuel level sensor in the gas tank for the gauge issue. more then likely a engine control module reprogram to fix a flase egr position code the 1404 is not a clogged valve it's either a sticking vlave or just a reporgram issue. thatn needs to be done at an AC delco repair shop of a GM delaer. as for the coolant leak where abouts do you see the coolant front of the engine area or rear? as for the gauge on that car they always seemed to read a bit lower then the actual engine temp pretty normal on the gauge that is. if your looking at it on the trip calculator (some had enhanced read outs) and it shows 160-170 then I would suspect a termostat is opening way too soon but if that were the case it would also trip a p0128 code in the computer along with the 1404. good luck :)
