Pontiac Repair: replaced steering column,, volt ohm meter, gauge wires

Question
Hello: After replacing the steering column and finding that the old one had a security or remote starter box added to (spliced into it) everything was replaced without the spliced stuff all pluged into proper connections, but car won't start. all the lights,radio,horn...etc work but car won't start. by passed the and went directly to starter which started but shut right off. what do you think might be the problem. 92 pontiac bonneville please help.

Answer
Hey Norman:
the issue is with the key. that car has a passkey system. the black pellet in the iginiton key. the pellet # is not that same as was in your car. there are a couple of ways to fix it the right way and the easy way. the right way is to disassemble the steering columns and swap out the ignition lock assembly from your old one to the new one. The easy way to so it is this have someone hold the key and use a digital volt ohm meter and measure the resistance of the pellet in the key. do ono touch the leads with yout fingers it will change the resistance. Then goto radio shack and get a resistor that is a close to that resiatnce as you can get one with heavy wattage. there is a fudge factor on the resistor so if it's not exact don't worry abut it try top get it with in 50 ohms or so.... then on the column there is an orange harness that runs though it with 2 white very thin gauge wires in it. jut the wires back and solder the resistor inbetween the 2 wires that will mimic the resistor that the pass key module in the car had learned. Good luck :)
