Pontiac Repair: wiper linkage 98 grand prix, windshield wiper arms, crank arm

Question
QUESTION: Hi Todd, wipers stop in up position while in intermittent mode. Could this be the stop tab? or trans or linkage?
Thanks
John

ANSWER: Hi John:

It's either the stop tab on the tranmission is bent or the wiper part arm the park tab snapped off the arm. If the stop is bent it can be bent straight back up and down so the tab on the park arm can contact it. if the tab broke off the arm it's junk you will need a new arm. Do a google search for park arm replacemnet ther is a special proceedure you need to do to time it correctly. good luck :)

QUESTION: Hi Todd,
this is frustrating as all hell. I actually had a new transmission on hand and checked stop tabs on trans and mounting frame, they appear to be where they're supposed to be. Re-assembled and test: wiper arm pauses at a 45degree angle now rather than straight up and down. I looked up the service bulletin below, called a GM buddy who will look up part for me on Monday morning. According to this service bulletin, it may be the wiper crank arm assembly, which I assume means the linkage between the trans and the wipers? Thanks again for taking the time to correspond.
There is a GM service bulletin for you car #73-82-05A: WINDSHIELD WIPER ARMS/BLADES PARK AT INCORRECT LOCATION - (Apr 1, 1998)

CORRECTION:

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, REPLACE THE WIPER MOTOR CRANK ARM WITH P/N 12367235 AND INSTALL WATER DEFLECTOR P/N 10411068. ALSO, ADDITIONAL SEALING MATERIAL MUST BE ADDED TO THE CRANK ARM COVER TO IMPROVE THE DEFLECTION AND CHANNELING OF THE WATER AWAY FROM THE CRANK ARM ASSEMBLY.

Answer
that is correct for that car Not sure about the part# for the crank arm and yes that is the arm that attaches to the motor and in turn connects to the tranmission it's self. ther is a proceedure you need to follow to time it correctly. First off the arm has to be in the non park position and then you need to turn on the wipers in delay mode the longest (slow) delay when the motor stops running turn the key off then attach the arm to the motor the park tab on the arm should be 7MM away from the stop on the transmission. then attach the trasnmission to the park arm and put that new style deflector over top of the motors assm. then turn the key back on put the wipers on low let them run for a few cycles. then turn the wipers off on the switch. put the cowl back on and the wpiers arms on the trasnmission and you should be good to go.
